THE VIKING WAY(PART 2)
Humber Bridge to Lincoln - 100 miles

May 2017

So, here we go ... the Viking Way part two ... which is really the first half of the Viking Way ... but we walked the second half (our first half) last year.

Last year we enjoyed the walk from Lincoln to Oakham despite being rained on every day.   This year the weather forecast was much more favourable with good weather predicted all the way.   As it happened the weather was probably a bit too good as we found the blazing heat very tiring and it was particularly hard on the feet.

We took six days to complete this half of The Way - five reasonable length, one a little too long given the weather conditions.   As a special bonus, on Day One we were accompanied by Marc and Nic my brother and sister-in-law, and were joined by my Dad for an evening meal.   The long day was on Day Two when, due to the lack of accommodation, we had a significant detour to stay overnight in Market Rasen.   Thereafter Carolyn suffered the after-effects of sore feet much more than usual - and the heat just made things worse.

There also seemed to be much more road walking this time - which again is not ideal when you have hot and sore feet.  Nonetheless we stuck at it for several days until making a (very sensible) decision to catch a bus for part of the last day in order to make sure we got to Lincoln station in time for our train home.

Our accommodation throughout was adequate.  Not quite as good an overall standard as last year, but a special mention goes to Jackie Taylor at The Old School in Donington-on-Bain, who arranged for her husband to turn around on his way home from work and collect pizza and chips or us when we found that the local pub was not open on Tuesday night.

All-in-all a good walk, but not our favourite.
