THE VIKING WAY (Part 2)
Day 1- Humber Bridge to Barnetby le Wold
- 14miles

A break with tradition to start this walk.   As we were so close to 'home' we were joined by Marc and Nic for the first day.

Dad drove us to the Humber Bridge and performed essential pre-walk photo-taking duties, then we were off along the river bank towards South Ferriby.   The path was flat and wide, passing a tile factory and a nature reserve created on the site of old clay pits.   Very pleasant.

After a couple of miles we came upon some very familiar ground for Marc and myself - Chequers and the old quarries at South Ferriby - the location of many happy childhood memories walking here and skimming stones with our Auntie Maureen.   After passing the pond and plaque in Cliff Road we turned up the track to pass the church and Middlegate Quarry onto Horkstowe Top and expansive views across the Ancholme Valley.

At Horkstowe Village we turned to follow a country lane then bore onto a bridleway that followed field edges on a wide mown track.   Shortly after we came upon a convenient log pile for lunch stop.

After lunch, more of the same - a wide, mown path along field edges and green lanes - very pleasant, but not exactly inspirational.   Still, we had good company and made easy progress on this stretch.   After an afternoon water stop we found ourselves trudging down a tarmac road towards the A18 with our first sight of our destination, Barnetby, in the distance.

After negotiating the main road and a couple of roundabouts we were on the final pull into Barnetby and a well-earned celebratory drink at the Whistle & Flute.   Everyone was suitably tired after a good walk.   After settling into our B&B (which we were all convinced was a formerly - or maybe still is - an old-folks home)we headed back to the pub to meet Dad for a meal.   We waved Marc, Nic and Dad off and returned to our strangely quiet and sterile digs...
